new design, spiders and book giveaways

June 9, 2008

I changed the layout.  I liked the old one, but I wanted something a little more “fresh” looking.  Blogroll and widgets are now on the left and I think the font is a little easier to read.  What do you think?

Spiders freak me out.  Seriously, they are one of the only insects or reptiles that really just scare the dickens out of me.  And in the past few days I think my fear is going to an irrational level (as if it weren’t there already).  I don’t think I blogged about this… a few days ago I was watching Extreme Makeover and the woman who was getting her extreme makeover had a ton of scarring and hair loss from a brown recluse spider bite!  She was unpacking her husband’s duffel bag from Iraq and felt something on her face (the brown recluse), so she brushed it away.  From what I understand, it did so much damage because they didn’t realize what was happening to her until several months later.  In second or third grade, the librarian at my elementary school was out for about two weeks because a brown recluse bit her on the back of her neck and her skin started to rot away (if you haven’t seen the results of a brown recluse bite, Google it.  I don’t want to subject you to the grossness unwillingly).  Anyway… that was the first time I started to really develop a phobia.  And then a black widow in my mailbox, then the trashcan… anyway, you get the point.  Well, I just watched that episode a few days ago and it’s really put me on edge ever since.  I walked outside and felt a spider web on me, I freaked out, brushed myself off a thousand times and still wasn’t satisfied that there was no spider.  And this morning, after my first post, I felt something on my arm, brushed it off, saw it fall.  It was a spider.  A brown one, but probably not a brown recluse, it was a little too small.  But my paranoid self saw cross-legged on the piano bench to eat my cereal because I doubted it could crawl up the smooth, glossy surface.  I mean… I have got to get over this fear, it’s eating me alive!  (Hopefully only figuratively, haha.)  Do any of you have a fear like this??

::EDIT::  Did anyone else hear about the tomato recall??  Isn’t that insane?!

  2. haha, i love dickens phrases! :] it hurt like the dickens!/burns like the dickens!/what the dickens?!/what in the dickens does she wants?!

  3. save the shopaholic & sister book for me. i still haven’t read the others but i plan to get to them eventually. and i can’t believe you still have celebration of discipline. i think you should save it so we can have a burning party. haha.

i did hear about the tomato thing. i ate at cheesecake factory the other night with some of the other interns and our server informed us that they weren’t serving any tomatoes because of it. crazy.

  4. I want Memoirs of a Geisha please. And the hospital and a lot of fast food places aren’t serving tomatoes because of the salmonella (I don’t think I spelled that right).
