terrific tuesday?
June 10, 2008Filled up my gas tank. Got out my receipt from the last fill-up and calculated my average MPG. 16!!??!! Horrible. I hate city driving. So, it is now official: I am looking into trading in my car. I looove my car, but I don’t think this is worth it. Starting in August, I’ll be commuting 40 miles a day one way. 80 total. Which is just unacceptable with gas prices and my city MPG. And I think the best I ever get is around 21/22. Gotta weigh out whether or not it’s worth it, but right now I’m thinking that’s a yes.
Yesterday afternoon, I was listening to Star 94 and one of the DJ personalities (not Cindy or Ray… the other girl) was talking about how she and her husband went to see the Road to Freedom exhibit at the High over the weekend (anyone want to go with me soon??). And what she was getting to was that parents brought their young children and were teaching them about the Civil Rights movement through these pictures at the exhibit and then through their own eyes. Like, “This is what I was doing during this time…” and so on. Which, of course, brought up the questions: what do you want your kids to know about the time in which you lived? What events or places do you think it’s really important for them to know about or to visit? Moments in history that you remember, such as JFK assassination, the Challenger explosion, 9/11, Obama’s nomination, etc. And then places like Gettysburg, Arlington National Cemetery and the tomb of the unknown soldier. Anyway, for some reason I was getting all choked up in the car thinking about what I would tell my kids about any of these things. What/where do I think is important enough to teach them about from my own perspective? For example, teaching them about 9/11 and then telling them what I remember about where I was, how I felt, what I knew and didn’t know about what was happening at that time. Much like these parents at the High exhibit were recounting their own memories about the Civil Rights movement and whatnot. So… what do you want your kids to know about or where do you think a person should go at least once in their life? I do agree with one of the callers that everyone should visit Arlington National Cemetery at least once, just to see it. It’s one of those weird things that just really resonates with you once you visit. Plus, it might just be the absolute quietest public space on the face of the planet. What would your events/moments/places be?
::EDIT::
Remember when I made those escort and table cards for that wedding back in early May? If you don’t, I’ll recap. It was… interesting, to say the least. Hot pink and aquamarine color scheme. PLUS a sports theme for the cards. Not just any sports theme, of course. A Red Sox and Yankees sports theme. I am not joking. But I think I did a pretty good job with them despite the interesting “theme” going on there. The table cards were a task, but Lindsay helped me out one night and we just got all of them done. Anyway… she finally messaged me back on Etsy today because she wants to email me pictures from the wedding! Even though I knew she loved the cards in the pictures, I was getting really anxious because I never heard back from her and I was starting to worry that she hated them or it just wasn’t what she thought, etc… but now she has calmed my fears and I feel a lot better about it. I doubt I’ll post the pictures since they don’t belong to me, but if you want to see them just let me know (I know Katie and Lindsay will be interested to see these haha).

if you trade your car in what are you going to get instead?
i’ll probably tell my kids about 9/11. Other than that, I really don’t know - I suppose it’ll depend on what is remembered and sticks out from “our time” in the history books - and there’s really no way to tell what will till we’re in the future. My dad likes to tell people the story about Elvis dying, because he lived in Memphis at the time. He was getting his hair cut and all the women there started crying.
not sure about a new car yet. i haven’t test driven anything. i know what i like looks-wise and from just researching MPG. other than that, not sure. paul’s helping me and i’ve gotta talk to my dad. he’s the car know it all.
Three things…one…good luck with the GACE - you are gonna do GREAT!!! I have no doubt…two…I want to go to the exhibit. I’ve heard it’s awesome…three…I have to see these pictures!
